The Ulster GAA Writers' Association held its 26th annual Banquet and Awards Night in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran, on Friday, November 15th. Representatives from all sections of the GAA, including the UGAAWA President, Bishop Tony Farquahar, Ulster GAA former President, Aogan Farrell and Ulster Council PRO, John Connolly attended. Each of the nine counties was represented though the Ulster Senior and Minor champions in mens football were unable to attend due to a function organised by Monaghan County Board in Monaghan on the same night at which the Ulster medals were presented. Darren Hughes from Monaghan, who won the UGAAWA Personality of the Year travelled to Bundoran to collect his award and then headed back to the Monaghan function.

Apart from the normal Annual Awards, sponsored by Belleek Pottery, Jeweller Garret Mallon and O'Neill's International Sports, there was a presentation to the captains of winning all-Ireland teams.

Communications - Declan Woods, Cavan;

Referee - Joe McQuillan, Cavan

Female Handball - Aisling Reilly, Antrim.

Male Handball - Paul Brady, Cavan.

Camogie - Grainne McGoldrick, Derry.

Ladies' Football - Catriona McConnell, Monaghan.

John McAviney Services to GAA - Tom Daly, Donegal.

Hurler - Paul Braniff, Down.

Male Football - Sean Cavanagh, Tyrone.

Personality - Darren Hughes, Monaghan.

Chairman's Award - Opt for Life.

The Chairman made a presentation to Opt for Life, which was accepted by Dermot Dowling repressenting Opt for Life. With him was Stuart Robinson, who is a successful transplant patient, and he told of his experience and the wonderful new life, which the transplant brought to him.

John Martin also made a presentation to Tony McGee, one of the founding members of UGAAWA and Treasurer for 25 years, as a mark of appreciation for the excellent work he has done during the 25 years and since then. He presented him with a framed photograph which has Tony together with the Selection Committee for the All-Stars of 1981.
