Not often a player on the losing side wins the Quinn Building Products UGAAWA Monthly Merit Award but CONOR McMANUS has bucked the trend twice. He did it in April last year and has done it, again, in February this year. Ironically, he did it both times after Monaghan was beaten by Dublin

The Clontibret man turned in a sparkling performance against the Dubs in the Division One NFL, at Coke Park, when the Oriel County came up just a point short, despite Conor's 12 glorious strikes, nine from free-kicks and three from play. It was an eye-catching individual show, by any standards, as McManus (28) once again showed the Dublin defence a clean pair of heels. A high percentage of his seven points from placed balls was earned by himself.

“It's nice to be recognised, again, with this monthly award,” enthuses Conor. “Getting is early in the year is nice and is a good boost for the season. There are a lot of players pushing for places in the Monaghan panel now and they are showing up well. We all have   to look to holding on to our jersey.

“Team performances is, of course, what matters but it is always very nice to be recognised individually. Those 12 points against Dublin is my highest tally in a senior county match and that pleased me, but the result didn't.”

McManus was pushed for the award by Antrim hurler Ryan McCambridge who was superb for Cushendall in their All-Ireland semi-final defeat of Galway champion Sarsfields. Ryan's winning of the high ball was magnificent, one of the best performances by an Antrim hurler at this level.

Also considered for the award were Mattie Donnelly (Tyrone), Seanie Johnston (Cavan) and Ryan McHugh (Donegal and UUJ).

Conor, the Business & Development Manager with MCR, was presented with his award by Quinn Building Products area manager Terry Fay, at a function in Quinn's Corner, Ballygawley Rd., Donaghmore. The winner receives an engraved Belleek Living Vase, silver crafted cuff links from Carlingford Design House, training gear from O'Neill's International Sports, a medical kit bag from 3FiveTwo on behalf of Kingsbridge Private Hospital and two tickets plus overnight accommodation for the next UGAAWA Banquet.
