UGAAWA MERIT AWARD For November 2014

A little bit of history is being made as this is the first time that we have two winners of our Monthly Merit Award together for a joint presentation. It is because our October winner was away sunning himself in Oz when he would normally have been here

Chrissy McCaigue had a storming month of October when he was in action with his club Slaughtneil every weekend, mixing football and hurling and helping the footballers into the Ulster Club SFC final and the hurlers into the semi-finals. Then he took off to Australia with the Ireland team for the Compromise Rules

“When I was there I got a phone call from my mother to say that she had read in the paper that I had won the UGAAWA Merit Award for October and I was surprised but, of course, delighted. I’m also delighted to be able to be present now to accept the honour,” he enthused.

Delighted to be present, too, for the joint presentation was Termon hotshot Geraldine McLaughlin who netted a fantastic 3-8 when leading her team to victory in the All-Ireland Ladies’ SFC final during November. That performance put all other displays a little in the shade.

Not only did Geraldine (21) fire home 3-8 but she also had a hand in all of the other Termon scores and that despite playing with a damaged leg. Had she not have had that drawback one wonders what sort of total the Sligo IT Recreation & Leisure under-graduate would have totted up!

This is the second time that Geraldine has won the Monthly Merit award. When Termon collected the Ulster title in 2010 for the first time it was teenager Geraldine who pushed the team on to victory. That was October 2010.

“It was lovely and exciting to win the award then and it is super to win it again. I’m really pleased with the honour and it is a great bonus after us winning the All-Ireland,” she stresses.

She doesn’t confine her football talents to GAA, of course, as she is a noted soccer player, as well. She has played with a number of junior teams in Donegal but, more recently, with Castlebar.

“I play in midfield in soccer so I don’t have the same chances of scoring. However, GAA is my first love and that’s what I concentrate on,” she says.

Geraldine has been in the Donegal senior team since 2010 and was a member of the All-Ireland Intermediate Tir Connail winning squad.

Both Chrissy McCaigue and Geraldine McLaughlin receive an inscribed Belleek Living vase, specially designed jewellery from Carlingford Design House, training gear from O’Neill’s International Sportswear and a sports voucher from the UGAAWA.
