Quinn Products UGAAWA MERIT AWARD For November 2017

HARRY LOUGHRAN wasn't very hopeful of being playing football in November 2017, let alone winning awards for his performances during the month, but the Moy man overcame adversity to push his way into the Tyrone senior squad and win an Ulster Intermediate Club medal with the Red Hand champions.

“I had back trouble that kept me out of football for four years and I missed the Tyrone minor and under-21 successes,” he recalled. “When I finally recovered and got into the Tyrone panel I had a few other niggling injuries.

“I was beginning to wonder if it wasn't going to happen for me but, thankfully, I am 100 per cent now and, hopefully, that will continue.

“Mickey (Harte) was very patient with me. I got in as a sub against Mayo in the league which pleased me greatly and, hopefully, I will get a few games in the McKenna Cup.”

It was because of his sparkling form and score-taking with Moy in the Ulster Club IFC – he scored a wonderful goal against Newbridge – that he laid his claims to winning the Quinn Building Products-UGAAWA Merit Award for November and when told the news he enthused:

“That's brilliant, very good. I'm delighted, thank you very much. I hoped that this was going to be a big year for me and winning the Ulster club title, followed by this award, it has started very well, indeed,” beamed the Blackwatertown Primary School teacher, who has Armagh blood in his veins.

“My late grandfather, also Harry, played with Armagh against Down in an Ulster final which Down won and went on to take the All-Ireland title, as well. My uncle, Vinny, also played with Armagh and, now that I am teaching in Blackwatertown, I'm in line for some good natured banter,” he laughed.

As his Monthly Merit Award, Harry receives an engraved Belleek Living vase, hand-crafted silver cuff links from Carlingford Design House, training gear from O'Neill's International Sportswear and two tickets to the next UGAAWA Presentation Function, which will be held in the Four Season's Hotel Monaghan on Friday, February 2.

To win the award, Harry beat off strong claims from Mickey Moran, who continues to weave his magic with Slaughtneil footballers, while also under consideration were female footballers Laura McEnaney (Corduff) and Maura McMenamin (St Macartan's, Augher).

The presentation was made to the winner at a function in Quinn's Corner, Donaghmore, by former Fermanagh Allstar and Quinn Building Products Area Manager Marty McGrath.
