June is surely the busiest month of the year in GAA circles with men’s and women’s football, hurling, camogie, handball, etc. all in overdrive will muscles being strained in efforts to take a further step in championships.

It is not easy choosing the winner of the UGAAWA Monthly Award for June and much consideration goes into the selection. After that consideration, and a number of rounds of voting, the nod goes to Armagh’s KEVIN DYAS, who gave a five-star performance in the Ulster SFC drawn semi-final against Monaghan. That was after contributing much to the Orchard team’s victory against Cavan.

“It is fantastic news to hear that I am the winner of the June Merit Award,” enthused Kevin (26) when told of the decision. “This time of year is, certainly, extremely busy and there is sure to be many worthy candidates of the Merit Award. A lot of great players have been winners in the past and I’m delighted that my name is now being added to the list.”

June was a milestone month for the Dromintee star. He finished his commerce course at UCD and gained his degree with flying colours. He has also a job waiting for him with the Belfast branch of PWC.

Dyas, of course, spent two years with Colingwood in Oz but it wasn’t a happy time for him. A ruptured hamstring halted his progress and, eventually, ended his hopes of making it in Aussie Rules football. Now he’s glad to be back playing his first love.

Winning the June Merit Award compensates somewhat to Armagh losing out in Sunday’s USFC semi replay and it gives him a boost for the All-Ireland qualifier against Tyrone, next weekend.

To get the UGAAWA Merit Award, Kevin had to beat off challenges from Antrim hurling goalkeeper Chris O’Connell, Monaghan goalkeeper Rory Beggan and Donegal solid defender Paddy McGrath.

Kevin was presented with his award of an engraved Belleek Living vase, engraved silver cuff links from Omeath jeweller Garrett Mallon, training gear from O’Neill’s International Sports and a Sports Voucher from the UGAAWA at a function in Quinn’s Corner. He will also get two tickets and overnight accommodation for the UGAAWA annual banquet at the Great Northern Hotel, on Saturday, Novermber 1.
