Launch of Silver Jubilee Banquet 2012

It is Silver Jubilee time within the Ulster GAA Writers’ Association and, to mark the milestone, Jubilee teams in football and hurling will be honoured at the 25th annual banquet this year.

That was one of the interesting disclosures made by UGAAWA chairman JP Graham when the launch of the Silver Jubilee Banquet was hosted by the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran, this week. The banquet will be held at the Great Northern on Friday, December 7.

“The Silver Jubilee teams in hurling and football will be selected from players who have won our monthly and annual awards over the past 25 years,” explained the chairman, “and we are not forgetting the other branches of the GAA, either.

“There will be individual Jubilee Awards presented in ladies’ football, camogie, women’s and men’s handball, again from our award winners over the last 25 years.

“No doubt, like the naming of all award winners in sport, there will be controversy about the selections but none of these types of awards please everybody. When one looks at the list of monthly winners, since we first honoured them in the eighties, the task of naming a team is enormous.”

To heighten the expectations, the football team and the individual winners will not be announced until the night of the banquet but a list of 50 footballers will be published beforehand. The hurling team will be announced on the week leading up to the function.

Normally, the UGAAWA banquet is held on the third Friday in November but, with the Allstars heading off to the States in the middle of next month, the function has been re-fixed for December 7.

Wearing his chain of office as chairman of the local council, Great Northern Hotel manager Philip McGlynn said, before rushing off to a council meeting: “I have both my hats on today so I welcome the Ulster GAA Writers’ Silver Jubilee Banquet to both the Great Northern and Bundoran. We regard this as the Spiritual Home of the banquet as this will be the 17th time for it to be held here.”

Proprietor Brian McEniff recalled: “I have missed only one, the first one, of the 24 banquets to date and I’m delighted that the Silver Jubilee will be celebrated here.”

Attending the launch were many representatives from sport along with that famous ‘fellow’ Sam Maguire who was brought along by Donegal secretary Aodh Máirtín O’Fearraigh. Representing Belleek Pottery, sponsors of the UGAAWA since the outset, was Patricia McCauley and representing Donegal captain Michael Murphy was his dad Mick.

Tickets for the banquet will be on sale within the next few weeks and they can be purchased from members of the UGAAWA, from the Great Northern Hotel and by telephoning 07960531170.

Patricia McCauley, Belleek Pottery, displayed a China Replica of Sam Maguire at the launch. This piece was designed and produced to commemorate the Donegal victory in the 2012 All-Ireland football. This is a limited edition and is going ‘like hot cakes’, so if you would like one of these as a souvenir you need to contact Belleek without delay.
