There is little rest for top GAA players these days as Michael Murphy will testify. He returns tomorrow after helping Ireland demolish Australia in the Compromise Rules series and will immediately be plunged into club championship action.
He'll be helping his club Glenswilly against Monaghan champions Latton in the AIB Ulster SFC, at Ballybofey, and he will head into that battle after getting a big boost. He is named today as the October winner of the UGAAWA/Quinn Insurance Monthly Merit Award winner for October. It is his second such honour this season.
He gets the honour for last month after helping his club Glenswilly to its first Donegal SFC title and also playing a major role in the team's defeat of Cavan Gaels in the Ulster Club Championship.
"Winning the Ulster GAA Writers' Award for a second time within a few months is a terrific honour. It is really special to be recognised," was Michael's reaction on getting the news in Oz before heading back home.
"Being part of Glenswilly's first championship win was fantastic. Playing alongside lads, I grew up with, in the successful final was unbelievable. It was a really special moment when the final whistle sounded."
Murphy cracked home 1-7 in his team's 1-8 defeat of Naomh Michael's with the goal, early in the second half, being a real gem of a match-winning score. He followed that up with a winning penalty kick in the closing minutes of Glenswilly's preliminary round defeat of Cavan Gaels, taking the Tir Connail champions into next Sunday's clash with Latton, at Ballybofey.
Normally, the monthly winner of the UGAAWA/Quinn Insurance Merit Award would be presented with their trophy this week but with Michael Murphy winging his way back home just now the presentation will be made at the UGAAWA banquet in the Great Northern Hotel on November 18.
For the October honour, the winner beat off the challenge of Eoin McCusker, who hit the winning point for Dromore in the Tyrone SFC final, and Conleith Gilligan, who played a major role in Ballinderry's Derry SFC success.
