Quinn Products UGAAWA MERIT AWARD For June 2015

MICHAEL MURPHY is creeping close to Peter Canavan's record of winning six Ulster GAA Writers' Monthly Merit Awards. The Donegal captain is named as the winner of the Quinn Building Products UGAAWA Award for June and that brings his haul of such trophies to five, one behind the former Tyrone ace and equal with sharpshooter Stephen O'Neill.

At this time of the season there are many claims on recognition for the award and, indeed, it can be difficult to make a selection as people's perception of a winner varies greatly, Often journalists and spectators differ a lot in such selections but not too many people can argue with the Donegal leader being named this time.

His leadership, when often needed very much, and his own play stand out. His free-taking is superb from right, centre or left and from varying distances and under pressure. Those attributes were evident in the USFC games against Tyrone and Derry last month and, indeed, were the difference in victory and defeat. As a man of Michael's stature can expect, close attention is paid to him at all times by the opposition.

“I have missed a few frees, too,” he pointed out, “and I know that there must have been many other people very worthy of this award. That, of course, makes it more precious and I'm very thankful to get it. It is a big award every month and it is always very pleasing to receive it.”

He adds: “We will have to up our performance a lot for the final against Monaghan as what we have shown, so far, would not be near good enough. Monaghan is a very good team and they will be on home turf.”

That's for another day, however, and Michael Murphy has emerged from June with honours as the Letterkenny Sports Shop owner beat off, with the help of his colleagues, the challenges from Tyrone and Derry and also others in the running for the Quinn Building Products-backed UGAAWA prize.

Among those in the hunt were his county compatriot Yvonne McMonagle who fired home 6-5 in an ULSFC clash, Conor McManus who seems to always be in form and Fermanagh's Eoin Donnelly who impressed greatly, on his return, against Monaghan.

The presentation was made to Michael Murphy in his Letterkenny shop by Quinn Products Donegal area manager Damian Mone with the winner receiving the Belleek Living engraved vase, silver cuff links from Carlingford Design House, training gear from O'Neill's International Sports, a Medical Kit Bag from 3fivetwo and two tickets plus overnight accommodation for the UGAAWA annual banquet at the Great Northern Hotel on Friday, November 13.
