There was no need to explain to our April winner what the Monthly Merit Award is all about. He is a veteran of winning this much sought-after award as he has already collected it three times and added a UGAAWA Male Footballer of the Year Award, as well.

Armagh captain STEVEN McDONNELL is the winner referred to after a highly successful April during which he led the Orchard County to victory in the final of the Allianz National Football League Div.2, against neighbours Down.

Winning the league final was very satisfying, indeed, and to win this award, as well, is very nice. It is always very nice to win an individual award as they don’t come around very often. This is a very pleasing award to win,” enthused Steven, a 30-year-old Contracts Manager.

His previous Monthly Merit Awards were won in August 2002, May 2005 and July 2008 which proves just how consistent a footballer the Killeavey man is. His annual honour was for 2003.

Steven’s CV is much too long to re-iterate here so suffice to say that he has won medals at all levels of football, including a Celtic Cross, as well as, Ulster Championship medals and a National League award with Armagh; Railway Cup honours and played internationally with Ireland. With his club Killeavey he has won league and championships at all levels apart from senior.

For our April award he fended off the challenge of Donegal star Michael Murphy while Paul Brady, after winning a record equalling sixth All-Ireland Senior Handball title plus the Senior Doubles title along with Michael Finnegan, was also in the frame.

Ulster GAA Writers' Association April award went to Armagh Captain Steven McDonnell, receiving his award from New Writers Chairman J.P. Graham and Fermanagh footballer, Barry Mulrone, Quiinn Insurance.
