With the number of unexpected results thrown up during JULY 2010 there was bound to be various contenders for our monthly Quinn Insurance/
UGAAWA Merit Award
for last month and so it was. Among the results was Down’s superb win over All-Ireland Champions Kerry, at Croke Park – a truly team effort with every Mourne man playing his part.

Still, there had to be a driving force behind the team and there was none greater than roving MARTY CLARKE who was everywhere from defence to attack from where he clipped over useful scores.

This is the second time that the now 22-year-old An Riocht clubman has won this award – the last occasion being in February 2005 after he starred with St Louis’ Kilkeel in the MacRory Cup quarter-final and semi-final.

“That was one of the biggest awards I ever received. I appreciated it very much and I appreciate this latest award just as much. It was a great team performance against Kerry and I was only a small part of it,” he stresses.

Unfortunately, Marty was not available to attend the presentation at Quinn’s Corner on Thursday, August 12 but he was represented by team coach Paddy Tally who received the award on his behalf.

The presentation was made by Rory Rafferty, Quinn Insurance Sales & Marketing Co-ordinator, who handed over the monthly award of a UGAAWA sports voucher, an engraved Belleek China vase, specially designed cuff links by Omeath Jeweller Garrett Mallon and training gear from O’Neill’s International Sports.

He will also receive two tickets and overnight accommodation for the UGAAWA annual banquet, at Slieve Russell Hotel, on Friday, November 19.

Marty Clarke ‘outpointed’ Antrim hurling full-back Cormac Donnelly, who was superb against Cork, and Tyrone ‘keeper Pascal McConnell, who brought off a number of excellent saves against Monaghan and Dublin, for the July award.
