Quinn Products UGAAWA MERIT AWARD For March 2017

March was a busy month with counties, clubs and colleges involved at national levels in football, hurling and camogie. There was, also, handball added in so there was plenty to choose from when selecting the award winner for the month
Two All-Ireland titles came north. For only the second time on record an Ulster team won the Senior Club Camogie Championship and, after three defeats in the O'Neill's All-Ireland Senior Singles 40x20 Handball final, Lurgan's Charly Shanks won the title.
It was Slaughtneil camogs who blazed the trail to success with a nail-biting 1-10 to 0-11 defeat of Galway champions Sarsfields and, indeed, any one of the Derry and Ulster champions' team could have been considered for our Quinn Building Products-UGAAWA Merit Award for March.
It is globe trotting SHANNON GRAHAM who, eventually, got the nod after her five star performance in the final as she inspired her colleagues with her midfield mastery.
At present, Shannon is in New Zealand and, obviously, unable to personally collect the award but, when notified of being the winner, she was delighted and stressed: “I wish I could be there.” Her dad and mum, Brian and Claire, were happy to stand in.
Team captain Aoife Ní Cháiside wasn't able to attend, either, but paid a glowing tribute to Shannon. “She never stops running during a game and in the All-Ireland final she was an inspiration to us all. Her own play, her promptings and her encouragement to all around her keeps us all going.”
Charly Shanks' achievement, as he defeated Westmeath man Robbie McCarthy, who was aiming for a four-in-a-row of men's All-Ireland Senior titles, at Kingscourt, was a major milestone, as well, but Shannon Graham out-pointed him.
Getting special mention, also, for their performances during March are Davin Flynn (Donegal) and Rory Grugan (Armagh).
As her award, Shannon Graham receives an engraved Belleek Living Vase, specially hand-crafted jewellery from Carlingford Design House, training gear from O'Neill's International Sports plus two tickets to the next Ulster GAA Writers' Association annual presentation function.
Shannon's parents, Brian and Claire, accepted the award on her behalf at a presentation in Quinn's Corner, Co Tyrone, on Monday, April 10 from Quinn Building Products Sales and Marketing Director, Seamus McMahon.
