The Dr McKenna Cup annually introduces a number of new faces but it also gives some established stars the chance to shake off the winter cobwebs and get up to speed for the season ahead.

It also gives players a chance to re-launch their careers and nobody grabbed that chance better than Fermanagh’s SEAMUS QUIGLEY who cracked home 3-21 in two full games and two half games. For that scoring blitz and, also for his overall performances, the Roslea sharp-shooter earns our Quinn Direct /UGAAWA Merit Award for January 2012.

“It was a pretty good month for the team (Fermanagh) and for me and it is very good to win this award,” agreed Seamus (23). “Awards are always nice to get. The McKenna Cup is a good competition and it gets players involved in competition early in the year. It is good preparation for the season ahead.”

Quigley has already collected two Fermanagh Senior Football Championship medals with his club, Roslea Shamrocks, and “a couple of league medals, as well.”

“I’m glad to collect this award, as well. It is nice to be recognised personally,” he said.

There were other notable achievements from players during January and, in the final countdown, Seamus Quigley breezed past Tyrone’s Owen Mulligan who has re-invented his county career with the Red Hands.

The winner was presented with his award at a function in Quinn’s Corner, on Monday, February 6, by Nicola Gormley, a Customer Focus Co-ordinator with Quinn Direct. Seamus received an engraved Belleek Living Vase, specially designed silver cuff links from Omeath jeweller Garrett Mallon, training gear from O’Neill’s International Sports and an UGAAWA sports voucher.
